National Register of Historic Places
The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the official national list of those properties considered important in our past and worthy of preservation. It is a program of the National Park Service, administered in Idaho by the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The program recognizes buildings, sites, structures, objects and districts that are significant in American history, architectural history, engineering, archaeology and/or culture.
Created by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the NRHP is part of a federal program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, recognize and protect our nation's cultural resources.
Idaho has over 1,000 National Register listings, comprised of over 5,500 buildings, sites, structures, objects and districts. There are many more eligible properties that are not listed because they have not had the formal paperwork completed.
