| HISTORY MOMENTS The Idaho State Historical Society reports that during this week in history: Idaho's first major gold discovery was made on September 30, 1860, by E.D. Pierce's party on Orofino Creek. Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist were born on October 1, 1924. During a speech on October 1, 1889, by then Idaho Governor Shoup, Idaho's contribution to the output of gold and silver bullion for the year was estimated to be $15 million ($150 million in today's dollars). On October 1, 1908, Automaker Henry Ford debuted his Model T car to the buying public. The Idaho Statesman reported on October 2, 1889, that the expense of the Boise public school year was $15, 514.62. There were 700 students enrolled, with 11 teachers in the district. The Mickey Mouse Club first aired on ABC-TV on October 3, 1955. Not to be outdone by its rival network, CBS-TV debuted its own children's show, Captain Kangaroo. |
