| HISTORY MOMENTS The Idaho State Historical Society reports that during this week in history: U.S. President Harry Truman signed a measure on October 26, 1949, which raised the minimum wage from 40 to 75 cents an hour. With over a hundred Concord coaches and 6,000 horses and mules in regular service, Ben Holladay's stage line operation (2,700 miles) greatly surpassed other western competitors. His Idaho operations continued until November 1, 1866, when he sold his entire company to Wells Fargo in order to avoid heavy losses when transcontinental rail service gradually replaced his overland service between Kansas and Salt Lake. On October 28, 1886, U.S. President Grover Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France, in New York Harbor. On November 1, 1976, the Idaho Statesman reported that the 38-acre Veterans Park and wildlife sanctuary in Boisethe site of the original Old Soldiers Homewas completed at a cost of $429,000 and open for everyone to enjoy. The winningest race horse in history, Man O'War died on November 1, 1947, at age 30. Man O'War went to the post 21 times and won 20 races. He won one race by an incredible 100 lengths and triumphed in another carrying 138 pounds. He beat a Triple Crown champion by seven lengths in a match race. |
