The Idaho State Historical Society reports that during this week in history:
A great moment in a life that knew much greatness took place on May 3, 1954, when Harry W. Morrison appeared on the cover of Time Magazine. Morrison founded Morrison-Knudsen Company at Boise in 1912 in partnership with M.H. Morrison. The company grew to become one of the world’s largest construction and engineering organizations. Morrison passed away in 1971 as the recognized dean of the construction industry.
The worst steamship disaster in the history of the United States occurred on April 27, 1865, when there was an explosion aboard the Sultana; more than 1,400 people were killed.
The 1867 May Day Picnic in Boise was rudely interrupted by the sheriff, who reminded certain parties that they had appointments in District Court that day as jurors and witnesses. The Statesman editor commented on his “cruelty” for forcing some to leave the picnic.
In 1922, at Rigby High School, Philo Farnsworth developed and sketched his first ideas for the electronic transmission of images for his high school chemistry teacher. A statue was placed in Statuary Hall in the Capitol Building at Washington, D.C. on May 2, 1990, and dedicated to the memory of Philo, the “Father of Television.”
