More Details, Information and Rules

Idaho Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month is an educational outreach program of the Idaho State Historical Society (ISHS) held every year in May.  The program provides an opportunity for the professional communities of archaeologists, historians, architectural historians and paleobotanists to share current research and Idaho's history with residents throughout the state.  Each year the Society produces a poster, brochure and other publication materials featuring the selected theme.  Publications are distributed to libraries, historical societies, museums, schools, government agencies, companies, the legislature and the public.  Additionally, publications are sent to all state historic preservation offices throughout the country.

The 2010 Idaho Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month Theme is the Idaho State Capitol, Idaho's premier government building to coincide with its reopening.  The Idaho Capitol, for the past few years, has undergone not only the addition of the underground wings, but a huge  and very meticulous renovation effort.

Photo Entry Topic

Any Historic Federal, State, County or City building throughout the state.  Some example of these public buildings are schools, city halls, post offices, courthouses and of course, the Idaho State Capitol, just to name a few.  Churches do not fall into this category, since we are focusing on government buildings. For this contest, we define 'historic' as a building built more than 45 years ago.  The buildings can be either currently used as a Federal, State, County or City building, or used in the past as one of these.  For example, the O. E. Bell School in Idaho Falls which is now an office building.

Photo Requirements

  1. Color Photos
  2. Artistic licence can be used to create unique views, angles, lighting, etc. but, the building must still be visible.  For example, a close-up view of a door knob from the Idaho State Capital Building would not meet the requirements.
  3. Photos can be edited to account for cropping, removal of dust and slight adjustment to correct exposure, color or contrast.  Obvious digitally altered images will not be judged.
  4. Photos must have a resolution of at least 4 million pixels. The resolution of the image is calculated by multiplying the image pixel height by the pixel width. For example, a photo measuring 1600x1200 pixels would not meet the requirements. This information can also be found often under 'image properties' in your photo downloading or editing software. The 4 million pixels resolution can be obtained from taking the photo with a 4 megapixel digital camera, or better. Additionally, set your camera to take the picture at the highest resolution setting. Be sure to not resize the photo, or compress the file size during downloading or emailing, as this will compromise the resolution of the entered photo. Photos not meeting the minimum resolution requirements will not be judged.
